(I’m easily swayed, but I’m also repulsed and really affected by the first book. I have read a lot of “food” books — Food Inc., Michael Pollan’s books, Mark Bittman’s books, Fast Food Nation, etc. etc. etc. (you should see my bookshelf) but this one is getting to me.)

What do you think about being a vegetarian? A vegan? A conscious omnivore (i.e. avoiding factory farmed products)?
What’s the best thing you ate today? (QUINOA for breakie!) 


You have squash in your hair…WIAW

After yesterday’s somewhat stressing day of eating, today looks pretty on track. And I feel mentally together, even though I’m bouncing between 120910291 different tasks I would like to get to tonight. Reminder: you can only do one thing at a time. Right now — BLOG.

This morning before swim, I had a breakfast of grapes with cottage cheese and some some all bran buds (a tablespoon, which I hesitated to add, but then realized it was a healthy addition that I had no reason to worry about). I didn’t know what I wanted til I was grabbing handfuls of grapes. 5am is a groggy time, but I know how to listen to my hunger then 😉 !


Im aware that that cereal looks like rabbit food. Whatever, it keeps me regular, and rabbits are cute.

I packed up some overnight oats in a jar (another success, with a banana post-swim–it was a longer one for me, about 2800m of awesome and I am really glad I took yesterday off of the pool!), another turkey sandwich on ezekiel bread with alfalfa sprouts, and apple, and a snack of carrots/almonds that I skipped and bought a greek yogurt in place of instead.



I also snarfed a LARA bar when I was at the library, studying/trying to write a paper for my sports sociology course. I love that class, I find it really interesting, and I like to write things, but I often feel like I’m on the verge of “getting it”. I really felt that way with the last paper, which I finished for the sake of finishing but need to edit before I hand in on Friday. Giving things a day to sit before I edit them is the best strategy for me and instead of procrastinating til the day before, I always feel better knowing I have SOMETHING if I fall off the face of the earth (get too busy, have a migraine, etc.) in the last stretch before something is due.


After bootcamp, which I posted on my workouts page (yay for being organized), I had a quick dinner. instead of what I thought I “should” have, I had what I was really hungry for, which was squash/almond butter and the spinach salad with raisins and maple vinaigrette you might remember from the other night. It was good then and it was good now. I really got into it, apparently, cuz I found some squash in my hair when I looked in the mirror afterwards…baha!20120208-190113.jpg

Some of the B L Ts today were part of a leftover sweet potato (made me realize I wanted the squash for dinner), some dried fruit (not the whole tub, silly) and gum if that counts. The grapes. Etc. It happens. I’m accepting it. Smiling about it even.

I’m at starbucks. Not doing much work, but I did manage to send a bunch of emails, make some phone calls, and relax a bit. Getting out of the house is good for me when I’m feeling like I have too many things to do. I am going to sleep in tomorrow and swim Friday instead (just this week I switched swimming groups, though I wish kind of that it was an every week thing). I have a massage appointment tomorrow because I REALLY think loosening up my IT band and my glutes is a factor in making my hip get better…


I still want to do a whole series of posts about what this injury has taught me or links I’ve found useful along the way. But anyways, physio today was good. I had more acupuncture and muscle stim and some active release. Physio said I could bike for ten minutes today without resistance–so I did. Didn’t seem to aggravate it (and if it hurts tomorrow, it’s probably more from moving around during bootcamp doing some of the moves that I think are safe) … so now it’s about being CONSERVATIVE and easing back into things. But I’m supposed to teach a spinathon this weekend and am not sure what to do about the situation–it’s for friends, will be a blast, and I really want to do it. I might spin easy for most of it, but that is so lame. Thoughts, decisions, etc. I don’t want to let anyone down, I don’t know if someone awesome who might also know the people would wanna do it for me as a replacement (NOT settling for just anyone 😉 ). Decisions, decisions.


Anyways, it’s time to do a reading. I need that sense of accomplishment. Or to go on Facebook. Or to research some life plan possibilities. You know, it’s all the same in the end!

Tomorrow’s busy too — I’m forward to the event at Brescia for EDAW.  I interviewed the speaker for an article I had in the gazette last week. The speaker is Jennifer Schramm, who is going to talk about her own struggle through and victory over an eating disorder. I can’t wait. If you’re in London, you should go. It’s donations and they benefit Hope’s Garden — awesome cause, awesome event. There’s really no downside! I’m also interviewing some inspirational people (I’ll leave it at that) for the article I mentioned/pleaded for some help with earlier. Those plus a massage are reallllly making for an awesome day!

WIAW – First for February

New month! WIAW! Excitement!

Ohhh, today was delicious!

Breakfast was cereal and banana and soy milk with pecans and was perfect.

After class this morning, I dropped Fashion Writing. Yay for Thursday afternoon freedom (tomorrow filled with a dietitian visit, physio and a trip to talk to a triathlon coach here in town and then maybe heading to a support group for a check-in)…Afterwards, I had something different for my morning snack – I can’t remember the last time I ate hummus! I always buy it, but it just sits there in my fridge til I share it or throw it out.  With zucchini and carrots, it was nice for a change! I had lots of options to choose from because I packed a fridge-ful of food in an attempt to stop myself from getting desperate or having to buy stuff today! Set yourself up for success…

The lunch hungries came early. I had my ham and cheese sandwich (on pumpernickel—making the most of that loaf!) and leftover tomato soup. It was amazing.

I spent the day working at the Gazette and trying to get started on my 750 word personal essay assignment. It’s due Friday. Ideas: losing toenails, my cookbook shelf, what it meant to cross the finish line of the first half marathon I ran, etc. I’m leaning towards the last—because it started off as a draft with my experience of grade 9 gym class. 750 words isn’t that much and it’s just a draft that is due on Friday, but I really want to try with this class because it’s something I enjoy and want to get better at! I spent some time at the library, where I downed my apple and peanut butter before heading to the gym to teach bootcamp and spin!

Both classes went well. I did a revamp of yesterday’s workout for bootcamp and I unfortunately forgot my new cd and had to use the spin playlist from January 9 …but oh well. Familiar faces and a good sweat session, though I’ll admit I couldn’t get into it myself. Hmmph. I am so cautious with this hip. Cmonnnnnn physio!

After my workouts, I snarfed my orange in the locker room so I’d have enough fuel to cook a dinner, which I did! I am pretty excited that I made such an improvement from last week’s post workout eating spree!

I made roasted potatoes (which I microwaved first), spinach chips (a la kale chips) which I boosted up with some steamed (microwaved) spinach), and a salmon steak! Best part? I have leftovers for tomorrow!

After dinner I picked up my replacement iPhone. Still praying I don’t end up having to pay when they realize it’s water damaged…

I also went in lulu – dangerous. I am having a decaf Americano now and need to do some work on two assignments due for Friday and then do my physio stuff before bed! I am going to try to get into that routine so that I’m off the computer and doing something not staring at a screen before bed! Swimming is early tomorrow but I’m looking forward to it and to a busy busy day.

A plan for my new phone is to keep it on silent except phone calls and to answer stuff less often (sorry folks, if it’s important call me). I don’t need to check my email every time I get out of the car or sit down somewhere. Just sayin’…I’m also thinking of keeping facebook off of it…but I’m not sure! I like posting at the end of the day here with my camera’s pictures so I might have a new routine going.

I’m going to rant for a second here, and then stop whining:

  • The weather outside is warm and crazy for February. While I don’t wish snow upon any of us, I am really frustrated by my injury because I can’t be out running in the warm weather.
  • My hip is getting expensive. Physio is 50$ an hour, massages are 60$ an hour, and parking on campus is pricey but when it really hurts, I’m going to shell it out. I want to be better—now.
  • Teaching bootcamp is fun but I am ready to be able to do it with them. C’mon hip, heal. I am so frustrated and I learned my lessons – don’t complain about “having to workout”—every workout is a treat (remind me of that when training gets tough), don’t jump into things too soon, don’t neglect your body, give yourself time to recovery, eat well.
  • If you have a boyfriend, don’t whine about how much you hate valentine’s day. Leave that for painfully single gals like me and just keep it to yourself, even if you think it’s a commercialized waste of time. I’ll take your chocolates. Thanks.

Not being able to run or spin means more time to blog…and I can actually do a WIAW post!

Breakfast was tasty…cereal with melted peanut butter and a banana. Not that photogenic, but that’s the general theme for today…delicious but ugly?

After class and a longish (2400m is long for me) swim, I had my lunch–a chicken, apple butter, light mayo, and spinach sandwich with a spinach salad.


I was hungry mid afternoon so I started with a Kashi bar at the Gazette office…facebook in the background is an indication of just how focused I was at this point in the day!


Which was quickly supplemented with my honey greek yogurt! Yum!


After I taught bootcamp (frustrating, I wish I could do more with them…sigh*), I was starving. I didn’t want to wait for pasta and I really was craving crunchy so I went with a huge ceasar salad with plenty of croutons, parmesan cheese, and the ground beef/mushroom combo I cooked up the other night.

I was already thinking about “not needing” dessert but when I started in on the chocolate chips, I decided to put them on a plate..napkin…and go for it. I added in the chocolate bar that I so enjoyed last night and now I am having faith that it will all be okay and that this experiment will work! Faith, trust, love…20120118-182903.jpg

With some hot chocolate…and I’m full and happy.


Now I’m going to see about heading to a yoga class tonight and maybe doing some readings…ambitious! Wish me luck.

WIAW and what I wanna bake Thursday

Bread, bread, and more bread. That is what I ate…

It started with my pre-run breakfast:

Ezekiel bread with almond butter and pumpkin butter

I went outside the breadbox for my morning snack:

yogurt -- simple much?

I forced myself to eat before my 2:00 exam even though I was too nervous to be hungry. I had what I thought was a turkey sandwich with lettuce and cheese but it turns out it was turkey and ham but with spinach. I’ll take it. More bread.

For my afternoon snack (pre-spin), it was a matter of myself forcing myself again (urgh) and I went with something easy: a Kashi crunchy bar.

After spin and a shower, I realized there was no way I was making it to Sarnia without starving. Instead of having a snack and probably overeating later, I stopped for chili at Tim Horton’s, reminding myself that I can only do better with eating REAL food not for convenience come tomorrow. Guess what…more bread!


I got home after a few pit stops (last minute shopping, cuz I can!) and sat around and realized how TIRED I am and how much my foot hurts…well, feet, actually. This is bad. I iced them and decided to have a snack and blog instead of going to bed. Since I was seriously lacking in the fruit and veggie department but was craving a sweet treat, I met somewhere in the middle and melted chocolate chips with a little milk. When I remembered I had skor bits leftover from a recipe I made at Thanksgiving, I went for it. Live a little! I know I didn’t eat enough for my activity level today so I figured I’d throw in the extra bit…

I’m really not going to beat myself up for not being “perfect” or even really eating all that many good things today. I am doing much better coming home and being stressed with exams, etc. than I have in the past: only small “oopsies” and not big binges and purging and all that crappy stuff that Ed told me would make things better last year and years prior. This is better, even if I feel a little uncomfortable about all the changes I’ve made and sometimes have anxiety over food. It’s rare and I KNOW I’m in a healthier place!

Not pictured is what I drank today. Coffee, coffee, and more coffee. And a vitamin water 10 (oh lord, I don’t want to admit that!). At least I’m giving myself something to work on?

I entered my eats into FitDay and got the following for my calorie balance when I entered my run, spin class, plus walking to campus (and sleeping) in my activity section:

I guess I didn’t eat enough after all, but I do NOT feel hungry. It will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow. I also know I probably took in some extras (i.e. those nibbles I am trying to limit) but 2.081 in vs. 2.818 out seems a little ridoncccccculous.

As promised, I’m hoping to add a few recipes (after much blog surfing and deliberation) to my baking list (based on the ones with the easiest ingredients and that I think my family will enjoy and not call “bird food” or something along those lines). Besides my family’s classics (chocolate chip, snowballs, thumbprints, peanut butter, sometimes sugar, and no bake cookies plus maybe fudge…oh lordy, bring on that elastic waist band!), I hope to try out:
