WIAW and what I wanna bake Thursday

Bread, bread, and more bread. That is what I ate…

It started with my pre-run breakfast:

Ezekiel bread with almond butter and pumpkin butter

I went outside the breadbox for my morning snack:

yogurt -- simple much?

I forced myself to eat before my 2:00 exam even though I was too nervous to be hungry. I had what I thought was a turkey sandwich with lettuce and cheese but it turns out it was turkey and ham but with spinach. I’ll take it. More bread.

For my afternoon snack (pre-spin), it was a matter of myself forcing myself again (urgh) and I went with something easy: a Kashi crunchy bar.

After spin and a shower, I realized there was no way I was making it to Sarnia without starving. Instead of having a snack and probably overeating later, I stopped for chili at Tim Horton’s, reminding myself that I can only do better with eating REAL food not for convenience come tomorrow. Guess what…more bread!


I got home after a few pit stops (last minute shopping, cuz I can!) and sat around and realized how TIRED I am and how much my foot hurts…well, feet, actually. This is bad. I iced them and decided to have a snack and blog instead of going to bed. Since I was seriously lacking in the fruit and veggie department but was craving a sweet treat, I met somewhere in the middle and melted chocolate chips with a little milk. When I remembered I had skor bits leftover from a recipe I made at Thanksgiving, I went for it. Live a little! I know I didn’t eat enough for my activity level today so I figured I’d throw in the extra bit…

I’m really not going to beat myself up for not being “perfect” or even really eating all that many good things today. I am doing much better coming home and being stressed with exams, etc. than I have in the past: only small “oopsies” and not big binges and purging and all that crappy stuff that Ed told me would make things better last year and years prior. This is better, even if I feel a little uncomfortable about all the changes I’ve made and sometimes have anxiety over food. It’s rare and I KNOW I’m in a healthier place!

Not pictured is what I drank today. Coffee, coffee, and more coffee. And a vitamin water 10 (oh lord, I don’t want to admit that!). At least I’m giving myself something to work on?

I entered my eats into FitDay and got the following for my calorie balance when I entered my run, spin class, plus walking to campus (and sleeping) in my activity section:

I guess I didn’t eat enough after all, but I do NOT feel hungry. It will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow. I also know I probably took in some extras (i.e. those nibbles I am trying to limit) but 2.081 in vs. 2.818 out seems a little ridoncccccculous.

As promised, I’m hoping to add a few recipes (after much blog surfing and deliberation) to my baking list (based on the ones with the easiest ingredients and that I think my family will enjoy and not call “bird food” or something along those lines). Besides my family’s classics (chocolate chip, snowballs, thumbprints, peanut butter, sometimes sugar, and no bake cookies plus maybe fudge…oh lordy, bring on that elastic waist band!), I hope to try out:

  1. I had some delicious latkes today! Nothing better than fried potatoes πŸ™‚ I’m impressed by all your working out on exam day… I think I’d be too caught up in frantic last minute studying to run and spin all on the same day!! You’re a rockstar!

  2. Well even if your eats weren’t enough, they do look yummy! Especially the chilli and bread – I used to go to Tim Horton’s all the time when I went to college in Maine (I think they’re a New England/Canada chain?) and always loved that combo :).

    I wouldn’t sweat being under your calorie count too much – something my dietician told me was that it’s not so much trying to be perfect every single day, but listening to your body, and balancing things out over the course of many days. So like, some days you’re just not going to be hungry, and trying to meet your requirements will just SUCK (I mean, can you even imagine trying to stomach 800 extra calories with your appetite – probs makes you a little nauseous thinkin about it right?). But other days, you’ll be ravenous, and might eat OVER your requirements – so in the end, it all balances out. And I find that when I’m super stressed, I really just can’t eat a darn thing – my heart rate’s too high I think lol! But then once the stress is over my body can relax and realize it’s hungry and demand I make up for the deficit hahaha.

    And +100000 to reading magazines pre-exam! I either have to do that or chat with friends! Fitness is always a good choice too πŸ˜€

    • Thanks for passing that advice along. I really think it will balance out…if I let it. Bring on the cookies and yummy recipes. πŸ™‚

      Timmies is definitely a Canadian thing, but they’re in Michigan now too (at least right over the border from here, but maybe it’s to please all of us who are shopping over there and jones-ing for our fix!).

      What’s your favourite magazine?! I hate that question…there is no fav in my books!

  3. Yay for your first WIAW! You eat pumpkin butter too? I’m obsessed with mine! πŸ˜€

    I really like Kate’s advice about how calories all balance out over time. I know it’s true, but it’s hard to remember to think that way. I always look at things on such a small scale, instead of looking at the bigger picture.

    • PS. In your comment on my blog, did you mean tofu shiritake noodles (I think that’s what they’re called…)? Nope, I’ve never tried them! They sounds neat though.

      Also you seriously have to try kale! One of my favourite ways to eat it, other than kale chips, is to “massage” it with mashed avocado and a bit of lemon juice, then use it to make a salad. It’s sooo good!

      • Okay, I am about to creep your blog for kale chips posts cuz I bought a huge bunch that barely fits in my mother’s fridge right now (with our 27 pound turkey…haha)! Wish me luck and get ready for either a serious accomplishment and a happy post or yet another kale fail!

    • Oooooh those look good! I am getting the Peas and Thank You cookbook from Santa (gifts are so not a surprise at this age)…yum!

      My pumpkin butter is from Remark and it was like 7 dollars. I realized when I was looking at it that it says it was made by youth in London, so I guess the money’s going somewhere good and I can justify the uber tiny container at that price. Ohhhh to have help with grocery money forever! Expensive habits…
